Training guide dogs is no easy task. Dogs start training to become guide dogs begins when they’re still puppies. They learn basic commands, and when they’re old enough, they go to a special guide dog training school to learn more skills to become guide dogs for the blind.
However, not all dogs training to become guide dogs graduate and actually become guide dogs. Health conditions can prevent dogs from guide dogs. When they don’t become guide dogs, they’re often adopted into loving forever homes.
A dog named Smudge was training to become a service dog. When Smudge was a puppy, she stayed with a foster mom named Deana. Deana also teaches puppies like Smudge to prepare them for further guide dog training in a special guide dog school. Deana and her daughter, Leah, already fell in love with Smudge.
However, they knew that Smudge wouldn’t be with them forever, and she will eventually stay with a person that needs her the most. While training Smudge, Deana also took in another puppy named Camden to train to become a service dog like Smudge. Camden and Smudge became best friends straight away. Smudge became like a mentor for Camden, and the two dogs became inseparable.
When the day came for Smudge to go to the guide dog training school, Deana and Leah were sad to see Smudge go. However, they both knew that Smudge would eventually go to a loving forever home and live with a deserving human that Smudge will help navigate the world.
Smudge was doing so well in the school, and Deana was so proud to hear about Smudge’s progress. However, Deana suddenly got an unexpected call from Smudge’s trainer, informing Deana that Smudge won’t become a guide dog. While Smudge was an excellent student, the trainer found that Smudge had a minor medical problem that could interfere with her duties as a guide dog in the future.
The training school eventually asked that if Deana was willing to adopt Smudge. Deana didn’t give it any second thought and said yes to the offer right away. Deana adored Smudge, and she knew that her daughter, Leah, already bonded with Smudge.
With Smudge on the back seat on the way to her forever home, Deana wondered if Smudge would remember Leah at all. Smudge remembered everyone and everything. Smudge was so excited to be back in the place where she grew up and experienced a lot of love. Here’s a heartwarming video showing Smudge going back home to the family who raised her.
