Cops Help Dogs Find Forever Homes By Taking Them On Rides Around The Town

Cops Help Dogs Find Forever Homes By Taking Them On Rides Around The Town

Kathy Morgan October 7, 2019

More people have taken part in helping shelter dogs find forever homes these past years. This is an affirmation that advocates for adoption need. It goes to show that their efforts to raise awareness about what happens to shelter dogs when they are not adopted are not in vain. People have different ways of helping. Some volunteer at animal shelters while others spread the news on social media.

K9 for a day

Officers from La Vista Police Department decided to help out, too. They organized an initiative called “K9 for a Day” where dogs from Nebraska Humane Society ride with them for the day. These officers take the dogs for a drive around town to increase their chances of finding forever homes.

The idea came about when Mickey, a Pit Bull, got adopted after the officers took him for a ride. He charmed the people he met along the way. Some approached him to give him a pat on the head or a belly rub which he loved, of course. A few days after his ride, someone called the shelter to file Mickey’s adoption papers. The strategy worked!

Good intentions, positive results

According to Officer Bryan Waugh, the Department Captain, it’s not just the dogs that benefit from K9 for a Day.  Their department also benefits from the initiative. He noticed that the dog’s presence in their patrol cars sparks the interest of the locals. This becomes a conversation starter for the officers.

As an aftermath, officers can easily interact with people from the community. This strengthens the relationship between the locals and the men in uniform. People (and dogs!) know that they are in good hands because the officers are doing their best to reach out to them. Watch the video to know more about K9 for a Day:

Kathy Morgan

I grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma (of course a lady never shares their age) many years ago. Growing up I could remember always enjoying many pets in our household. From rabbits, hamsters Guinea pigs and dogs I loved them all even to this day. After graduating from High School: I decided to search for my first job. Yep, you guessed it my first job landed me in a pet shop. I learned so much from that experience that twenty years later I am still affiliated with our four-legged friend. I no longer work in a pet shop; but I have devoted my life to writing articles about “man’s best friend” dogs. I hope you enjoy the articles, stories and videos of our furry friends on this website. See you on the inside.
