The Hospice House patients at Saline Memorial Hospital eagerly anticipate the weekend. This is because their favorite guest visits them every Sunday. During that time, the residents’ faces are adorned with broad smiles. This is because of the efforts of a young man named TJ and his very accommodating service dog named Corey.
TJ is fully aware of the difficulties and struggles hospice patients face. The Arkansas citizen was born with cerebral palsy and tardive dyskinesia. Because of his condition, his neurological system is compromised, and he regularly has uncontrolled movements. His parents bought him a service dog to assist him with his daily tasks.
Corey is a chocolate lab that underwent rigorous training to become a very effective service animal. Since being a part of TJ’s life, the dog has become indispensable to his owner. He would perform a range of duties for TJ.
On command, the dog would pick up objects, close or open the lights, and close the door, among other tasks. But the most important task is when TJ gets comfort from his best friend. The affectionate dog would cuddle up next to his owner and even rest his head on his chest.
When the young man felt ill or depressed, the dog was there to provide him with emotional support and a great deal of comfort.
TJ and Corey’s monthly trips to the Hospice House are the highlight for many of its inhabitants. Many of them do not get visits from family and friends. The presence of the nice dog makes them forget all their problems. The joy that Corey offers is irreplaceable.
The visits also provide TJ immense joy. He has always struggled with social interaction, but now he has many friends. This is all thanks to Corey and how he has broken down TJ’s barriers.
