Lost Golden Retriever Returns Home After Spending A Year Alone In The Woods

Lost Golden Retriever Returns Home After Spending A Year Alone In The Woods

Kathy Morgan October 31, 2021

Walter, a Golden Retriever, got himself into a pickle precisely one year ago. His mother, Kate Olson, and he had gone from New Hampshire to Missouri to see family. One morning, something must have frightened Walter as they strolled around the area because the dog got free of his collar and bolted.

After the incident, Olson stayed in Missouri for many weeks, leaving fliers all over the place. After that, she tried to return to Missouri, but COVID-19 made it nearly impossible. She knew her dear Walter was somewhere out there, and she couldn’t help but wonder what he was up to. As it turns out, the courageous canine spent an entire year by himself in the woods.

Olson was adamant about never giving up on her canine companion. She knew she could find him even if he were across the country. So she created a Facebook group called “Where’s Walter?” to assist in spreading information about the pup’s whereabouts. The organization grew to over 1,100 members, all of whom were eager to help.

She also collaborated closely with Lost Paws Trapping, which put up cameras and traps to aid in the capture of Walter. It took a year for Olson to receive any encouraging news, but when one of the cameras caught a glimpse of Walter nearby, she was delighted. The next day, the crew set up a trap in that location, and sure enough, Walter was captured. He was discovered over a year after he went missing, having walked around 10 miles.

Olson jumped on the first flight to Missouri after Walter was apprehended. Walter immediately recognized her and returned to his cheerful self. He appeared to have spent the entire year alone in the woods. Even though he was filthy, he seemed to be in good health. Fortunately, he only gained a few pounds during his absence.

Walter has had two baths since his return, including a complimentary spa day at the local groomer. He also has a vet visit coming up to make sure he’s in good health. Walter seemed delighted to be back with the comforts of a loving family after spending so much time in the wild. Olson will make sure that he receives extra attention and treats after his long travel.

About The Author

I grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma (of course a lady never shares their age) many years ago. Growing up I could remember always enjoying many pets in our household. From rabbits, hamsters Guinea pigs and dogs I loved them all even to this day. After graduating from High School: I decided to search for my first job. Yep, you guessed it my first job landed me in a pet shop. I learned so much from that experience that twenty years later I am still affiliated with our four-legged friend. I no longer work in a pet shop; but I have devoted my life to writing articles about “man’s best friend” dogs. I hope you enjoy the articles, stories and videos of our furry friends on this website. See you on the inside.
