Mark Freeley of New York already knew that his English Golden Retriever is a caring dog. However, he was surprised when his dog showed another side of his personality when they witnessed an animal in need of help.
One day, Mark and his two dogs, Border Collie Sarah and English Golden Retriever, were out on a walk at Long Island Sound when the latter ran to the beach in urgency. The owner didn’t notice at first but, when he took a closer look at what his dog was going for, he realized it was a drowning fawn!
He witnessed as Storm swam over to the fawn and grabbed it by its neck – an obvious attempt at rescue. Once they were safe in dry land, the dog immediately watched the fawn closely and kept on nudging to make sure it was alive. Thankfully, it was.
Mark immediately called some wildlife rescue experts for help. A few minutes after the experts arrived, the fawn got terrified and ran back to the water the second time, and worse, it’s farther away this time.
For the second time again, Storm went in after the fawn and attempted a rescue. However, the waters became too deep and, he was unable to do so.
That’s when rescuers Frank Florida and Erica Kutzing came in to help. Fortunately, they managed to tie a rope around the baby deer and brought her back to safety, making sure it would not run back again.
It turns out the fawn had injured eyes and was infested with ticks all over its body. In the end, the fawn will have to stay at Frank’s foster home to recover and will be released into the wildlife as soon as they see fit.
Mark Freeley admits that he did not expect everything to happen on that day at all. Moreso, he was surprised that his dog, Storm, had lifeguard qualities. We speculate it’s their natural instinct to help. Great job, Storm!
