Kinga Szpakiewicz always looks forward to going on hiking trips with her Rottweiler named Lusha. They love the peacefulness and the serenity of the California wilderness and would often spend several days walking and camping. This allows them to bond and get a break from the busy and fast-paced life of the city.
And to fully experience being cut off from civilization, Kinga would often leave all forms of communication behind. This proved to be quite a terrible decision on her part when they went on one of their trips.
Hurt
Kinga and Lusha went on a three-day hiking trip to the Sespe Creek Trail in Los Padres National Forest. As usual, they had an amazing time together. But on their final day, while they were on their way back to their car, The dog cut her paw on a sharp rock.
At first, it seemed that the cut was just a minor one, and the dog could still walk without any issues. But shortly after, the pain became unbearable and Lusha refused to take another step. They were still miles away from their car and Kinga had no way to carry the large 80-pound dog.
Fortunately for them, some hikers happened to pass by, and Kinga was able to get their attention. They helped carry the dog to a safe place, and they stayed there for the night. They were hoping that Lusha would feel better in the morning and could continue to walk by herself.
Rescue team on the way
But when morning came, it was clear that the dog could not continue to go on. One of the hikers had a phone with him so they got in touch with the Upper Ojai Search and Rescue. And although this is not the type of mission that they usually go on, the team agreed to help them out.
Six volunteers immediately went to the area and hiked several miles to get to the dog. They brought a special stretcher designed to be used on trails. For the next few hours, they slowly hiked through rocks, rivers, and numerous obstacles. And eventually, they got Lusha to an animal clinic.
The dog’s paw received treatment, and they were sent home that same day. Kinga is very grateful for all the help that these strangers extended to them. She knows that without their help, it would have been impossible for her to save her dog alone.
