A Radical Explanation Of A Dog’s Concept Of Time

A Radical Explanation Of A Dog’s Concept Of Time

Kathy Morgan October 8, 2019

There is this funny dog food commercial that has a rad explanation of our canine friends’ concept of time. The time that passes by for them is much longer than the minutes that we measure. The advertisement created by Bob Martin dog food in the year 2012 bases its reasoning on how long a dog year is when compared to a human year.

Traditional formula

This dog food commercial still adheres to the traditional formula of one dog year being equivalent to seven human years. Since one day for us is as long as a week for our dogs, that explains why they miss us so much when we get home from work. An hour for them seems like seven long hours.

No longer a mystery

When we scold them, they forgive us quickly, as for our pups, a lot of time has passed. This concept of time explains the mystery of why our dogs seem so hungry. A lot of time has slowly passed since their last meal in dog years!

Seven-year rule

The computation that a dog year is equivalent to 7 human years is no longer accurate. Though the traditional calculation of the seven-year rule is still commonly used, there is a recent general guideline. This guideline, published by the American Veterinary Medical Association provides us with the new and more accurate way of how to compute dog years into human years.

The guideline

This guideline states that the first year of the dog is equivalent to 15 human years. Then, their second year is equal to nine human years. After that, every human year of our pups is computed to be approximately five years. So that means that a two-year-old pooch is around 24 dog years old!

It makes sense

This dog food ad is hilarious. The explanation makes sense. Even if the guideline of how to compute dog years has changed from the seven-year rule, one thing remains clear. A dog year is much longer than a human year.

I grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma (of course a lady never shares their age) many years ago. Growing up I could remember always enjoying many pets in our household. From rabbits, hamsters Guinea pigs and dogs I loved them all even to this day. After graduating from High School: I decided to search for my first job. Yep, you guessed it my first job landed me in a pet shop. I learned so much from that experience that twenty years later I am still affiliated with our four-legged friend. I no longer work in a pet shop; but I have devoted my life to writing articles about “man’s best friend” dogs. I hope you enjoy the articles, stories and videos of our furry friends on this website. See you on the inside.
