When Chance was first discovered by officers from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Fort Myers, Florida, his mouth was taped shut and he was suffocating. He also had wounds that were consistent with dogfighting and he was presumed used as bait. The officers quickly took the young pup to domestic animal services where he can receive the proper medical treatment he needed.
But Sheriff Carmine Marceno was not satisfied with just helping the dog out and they decided to activate an intense search for the person responsible for the pup’s injuries.
And while they were doing that, they still made sure that the pup was getting all the love he needed to fully thrive like a second chance to live his life thus his name. Thankfully, despite all the sufferings he had been through, Chance recovered. And he was definitely just one of the brightest pups ever that you wouldn’t think he had been abused and abandoned.
And so, Sheriff Marceno took the extra mile to adopt Chance, deputize him, and give him home within their sheriff’s office family. Now, Chance is officially Lee County’s Animal Cruelty Task Force spokesdog. He is also given the big responsibility of being the face of the Deputy Dogs Pets on Patrol program. And he has also been named as the goodwill ambassador for the School District of Lee County.
Deputy Chance works closely with Lieutenant Richard Castellon in the community response unit. Together, they visit hospitals, schools, and clubs where they spread a zero-tolerance policy for animal abuse. They also share Chance’s story of transformation as well as raise awareness about shelter dog adoption to encourage more people to open their homes to these rescue dogs.
Aside from that, they also hand out educational materials about animal abuse during their visits. The sheriff’s office hopes that with Deputy Chance at the helm of their program, abusers would be put into jail and more people would be educated about animal cruelty and fight against it.
