Brad Harbert’s dog, Roxy, is being hailed as a hero after saving his family from carbon monoxide poisoning in their Ankeny, Iowa home one December night. According to Harbert, it was uncommon for the mellow coonhound mix to be loud and moving about so late at night. The dog does not even bark much during the day; when she’s asked to speak, she only howls.
Harbert said he could tell something was up with Roxy. She kept on jumping up and down his bed. When he woke up, he could already hear the alarm chirping, and even from the bedroom, he knew that it was not the fire alarm.
Harbert jumped out of bed, and when he did, Roxy led him to the hallway. He said that the pup also scratched his son Jackson’s bedroom door to wake him up.
Harbert explained that when the carbon monoxide detector is triggered and chirps four times, there is active carbon monoxide in the house. He made sure that his family, including the dog, safely made it out of the house before calling 911.
Moments after, the Ankeny Fire Department and the workers from the local energy company arrived. They found out that the carbon monoxide leak came from the home’s combination electric and gas fireplace.
Harbert said that Roxy is a life-saver and is very special to their family. He shared that when the pup woke him up that night, she was trembling and was seemingly worried that they were not going to make it outside in time. Harbert added that he is very happy to have a dog and very happy to have Roxy as part of the family. He also said that he hopes their story will encourage other households to get a functioning carbon monoxide detector.
