We all love our furry friends and want to care for them whenever we can’t be with them. Some people even go to great lengths to ensure their fur babies’ safety and bring them wherever they go.
However, there are instances when we can only bring them if we want to. That’s why entrusting them to daycare can be such a hard thing to do. But sometimes, even the best-laid plans go awry.
Take the case of Dexter, the dog. Jeremy and Sarah Henson, Dexter’s parents, left him in a pet hotel before their vacation in Las Vegas. The Hensons did not know that Dexter jumped across the 6-foot fence of the pet hotel. And he took a 2-mile, 90-minute journey to go back home.
Driving through Johnson County is difficult enough. I imagined a dog trying to accomplish it to get back to his home. But that’s just what Dexter did. Since the Hensons take Dexter on long walks, he uses his memories and instincts. Many dogs have excellent navigational abilities and can recall locations based on scents and sounds.
Thus, the Hensons, who were not expecting any visitors, were surprised when they got a message from their home security app. When they looked, it was Dexter. He pounded at their door and wondered why he couldn’t enter his house.
Jeremy then called the daycare and informed Dexter that he was in front of his Kansas home. The daycare was able to send someone to pick him up and return him to the hotel.
While it may have been a stressful experience for the Hensons, it’s also an incredibly heartwarming story of a dog’s love for his family. Traveling two miles to see them again is a testament to that. As the saying goes, “Home is where the heart is.” And for Dexter, his heart lies with his family. And we have to admit that Dexter is pretty adorable.
