During the COVID-19 pandemic, not only humans but also animals were affected. Many homeless animals were brought to shelters, but overcrowding became a big issue that must be addressed. One animal facility in Hawaii had a growing number of dogs, and the overcrowding became unmanageable. The economic downturn also affected the operation of temporary homes for animals, which eventually shut down.
The biggest rescue flight project
However, animal shelters with a high percentage of adoptions rescued overcrowded shelters in Hawaii. The Greater Good Charities collaborated with other shelters, such as the Wings of Rescue, transporting over 600 dogs and cats to Seattle, Washington. The animals were then distributed to other shelters with a higher chance of adoption. This was a massive rescue flight project known as Paws Across The Pacific and was the largest rescue flight project in history.
The project gathered the animals from shelters in Kauai, Ohio, and Maui. After transporting the animals, they received medical attention, including vaccines and spaying or neutering procedures. They were distributed to shelters in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, and British Columbia. All the animals arrived safely at their new shelters, where they could receive the care and attention they needed.
You can research and contact the participating shelters if you want to adopt an animal. These animals need a permanent home and deserve all the love and care, just like any other animal.
