Adoptable dogs with anxiety are sometimes overlooked. However, they all deserve to live a happy life just like any other dog. For this reason, some individuals have devoted a portion of their lives to help anxious dogs overcome their fears.
Shira Scott Astrof is an animal rescuer specializing in assisting traumatized canines. She has assisted other pets in recovering from fear and anxiety. Her dedication has allowed unadoptable canines to find loving homes.
Recently, Shira fostered a dog named Donnie who had a strong aversion to humans. It was difficult to just get him out of the animal shelter. It took her several hours before she could bring him home.
When Donnie first entered Shira’s home, he was terrified of everything. He chose a spot on the kitchen floor and remained there for an extended period of time. This is the usual behavior of worried dogs. They would choose to stay in just one place.
By supplying him with blankets and bedding, Shira made his favorite area a safe haven. She even slept on the same floor as the dog to make him feel more at home. This procedure was effective, and he quickly began to relax.
Shira wished she could continue fostering Donnie, but she had other animals to foster. She so asked a friend to take care of Donnie instead. Nikki, a friend of Shira’s, became an exceptional foster parent for Donnie.
Donnie’s personality eventually emerged, and he became more at ease around others. He was adopted successfully and is now living with another dog. Shira and Nikki’s efforts bore fruit.
Shira has assisted dogs in coming out of their shells for ten years. Every dog has a story, and she is honored to be a part of them. Similar to Donnie, more scared dogs will enter Shira’s home and transform into affectionate dog companions.
