Not all abused and neglected animals get a second chance in life. But one Pit Bull’s life was completely changed after a group of kind volunteers rescued her.
It was January 9th of last year, a brutally cold winter day, when Michael Favor from the New York-based, non-profit organization No More Pain Rescue received a report of a dog living in a dilapidated house in Staten Island. According to the report, the dog’s owners do not have the money needed to take care of their pet.
After a few days, the nonprofit organization received a call from the same concerned citizen, telling them the dog’s owners fled the freezing weather and left the poor pup all alone. With no second-guessing, Michael and his group went to rescue the Pit Bull. According to another volunteer (and Michael’s fiance), Erica Mahnken, she watched as Michael went in to pick up the dog, describing the house as a complete mess.
It was evident that the residents of the house lived in deplorable conditions. The house was dilapidated, with broken windows and a dirty floor. There was also no electricity and no heat – making the situation even worse. Michael, along with the other volunteers, finally found the Pit Bull, who they named Ashley. The poor pup had no water or food and looked as though she was starving for days.
Ashley ran to her rescuers, instantly trusting them. According to Michael, it is as if the neglected dog knew that they were there to help her. He called her, and she immediately hopped into his car, wagging her tail. She looked genuinely happy that someone came to rescue her. Upon close inspection, to their dismay, the volunteers saw that Ashley had scars. In particular, they saw cigarette burns all over her body.
Despite her previous state, Ashley was a happy and sweet dog, excited to be saved from the squalor she used to live in. The volunteers from No More Pain Rescue decided to bring her to the Fort Pitt fire station to give her a temporary shelter for a few days. The firefighters had no qualms about accepting Ashley to their quarters. It took Ashley a mere second to win the heart of each firefighter at the station.
The Fort Pitt firefighters and the No More Pain Rescue volunteers worked hand in hand to help rehabilitate the malnourished Pit Bull. After a few weeks, Ashley completely recovered from dehydration – her wounds also healed. She is now living a different life from her years of neglect. With all her new fur parents at the fire station, Ashley is finally home.
